$79 million redevelopment underway at Western Springs College

Friday, September 16, 2016

Construction work has kicked off on the redevelopment at Western Springs College says List MP based in Mt Albert Melissa Lee.

“At $79 million, this is the largest-ever investment in a New Zealand school, and includes $4 million to upgrade the Auckland Performing Arts Centre, which has its home on the school grounds,” Ms Lee said.

“It was exciting to be at the sod turning this morning with Education Minister Hekia Parata and representatives from the school and community.

“It is great to visit Western Springs College again and support the great work that they are doing to achieve learning here in Mt Albert.”

“This upgrade will see at least 80 per cent of the existing teaching spaces replaced.  The remaining facilities will be upgraded.

“The college is built on a former landfill and quarry, so there have been significant geotechnical challenges to take into account in the planning for this redevelopment.

“But Western Springs College is one of our highest-performing schools and is in the best location for our communities.  So it’s important we support the school and make sure its infrastructure is sound and fit for 21st Century learning.

“National has been consistent about making significant investments into our schools, both to support roll growth and to make sure we provide students with flexible spaces and innovative learning environments that enable them to achieve to the best of their potential,” Ms Lee said.

The redevelopment is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
