Melissa Lee congratulates local Ngārimu Scholarship winner
I was pleased to meet the whanau of Kingi Snelgar at Parliament where Education Minister Hekia Parata announced he is one of the five outstanding winners of the Ngārimu VC and 28th (Māori) Battalion Memorial Scholarship said MP Melissa Lee.
“Kingi is this year’s masters recipient, and is just one of just three New Zealanders admitted to Harvard Law School. This is an achievement he should be very proud of, I’m sure his Ngāpuhi iwi and his whānau are very proud of him,” said Melissa Lee.
“I am told he ultimately wants to become a Supreme Court Justice.”
“I want to congratulate Kingi on his dedication to his studies and his commitment to looking at avenues to advocate for Māori.”
The Ngārimu scholarship was established in 1948 in honour of the 28th Māori Battalion to support future Māori leaders to be successful in education.
“There were 114 applications this year. The five winners stood out and are examples to young Māori what can be achieved through hard work and dedication.”
